Matthew Pan

Director

Matthew Pan is an assistant professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Queen’s University in Kingston, Canada, a core member of the Ingenuity Labs Research Institute, and the director of the Machine Intelligence and Human-Robot Interaction Laboratory (MItRHIL). His current research agenda explores human-robot interaction from a variety of physical and social facets. Previously, he was positioned at Disney Research Los Angeles where he led a variety of projects involving social and physical human-robot interaction, and virtual/augmented/mixed reality technologies.

Dr. Pan obtained both his M.A.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Mechanical Engineering at The University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He received his B.A.Sc. (Honours) from The University of Waterloo in Mechatronics Engineering with Biomechanics Option.

Dr. Pan’s research interests generally fall within the categories of human-machine interaction and human augmentative/assistive technologies. Previously, his work has involved the study of haptic displays, affective computing and human-computer interaction (HCI). His current research involves investigating physical human-robot interaction (e.g., handover and cooperative lifting of objects), virtual and augmented reality, and the impact of robotics on society.
